"The India I Discovered" was written out of a profound love and respect for India. It is composed of various themes that intertwine only at the very end of the read. The book is intended for anyone wishing to discover this vast country through the eyes of the person who served as Israel's Consul General to Mid-West India in Mumbai over the past four years. To a large extent, it is also a book about us—about Israel, past and present.
This socio-political odyssey carries the reader back and forth into the depths of the subcontinent, embarking on a stirring personal journey within Israeli society. Through the mirror image of India, and as someone who has lived between these two worlds, the author sensitively and responsibly leaves to your judgment the open wounds between right and left, between the preservation of tradition versus secular liberalism, and between those who were once considered the "state of all its citizens" and those who constantly wish to prove otherwise.
"The Indian National Congress was the equivalent of the Israeli Labor Party, which ruled Israel with a firm hand for over three decades; however, diplomatic relations between the two countries during that period were cold and alienated. Indira Gandhi is the counterpart of Golda Meir: patriotic leaders and among the first women to head a state, although this phenomenon has not repeated itself since—neither in India nor in Israel. Indira and Golda are also tragic figures. While Gandhi rode the wave of success following the 1971 war with Pakistan, Golda was forced to resign after the 1973 Yom Kippur War. The State of Emergency declared by Gandhi in the mid-1970s, following her attempts to amend the constitution and her trial for using her official vehicle for political purposes, is strikingly reminiscent of the issues currently dominating the public agenda in Israel today."
